When a Moment Moves Us: Cape Hatteras

When a Moment Moves Us
The ART of Making a Difference – Part Three

Over the past three weeks, I've shared how three North Carolina landmarks have quietly inspired both a new painting and my keynote, There's an ART to Making a Difference.

The Linn Cove Viaduct taught us Awareness—seeing possibilities others overlook. The Old Guilford Mill reminded us of Resourcefulness—using what we already have. As I completed the final brushstrokes, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse revealed the final lesson.

For generations, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse faithfully guarded the "Graveyard of the Atlantic." But while the lighthouse stood still, the shoreline didn't. By the 1970s, the ocean had advanced to its very foundation. Everyone agreed something had to be done. The challenge was deciding what.  For more than twenty-five years, ideas were debated. Build a seawall. Leave it where it stood. Study the problem a little longer.  Finally, one bold decision changed everything.  Rather than trying to stop the ocean, engineers lifted nearly 5,000 tons of history and moved the lighthouse almost 2,900 feet inland. What had been delayed for decades was accomplished in less than a month.

Sometimes the greatest risk isn't making the wrong decision.  It's waiting too long to make one.  That lesson has proven true throughout my own life. Whether it was taking the time to paint Cape Hatteras before it was moved or stopping one afternoon to help a homeless gentleman—an encounter that eventually inspired the Honor Card—I've discovered that opportunities seldom announce themselves. They simply appear, inviting us to act.

Three Lessons Worth Remembering

  • Awareness helps us recognize opportunities others never see.

  • Resourcefulness reminds us that what we already possess is often enough to begin.

  • Timing challenges us to act before the opportunity passes.

This weekend those three lessons came together in a way I never imagined.

The painting you've followed from the first sketches to its completion was unveiled during my keynote for the Association Executives of North Carolina. Through the generosity of Source4, hundreds of commemorative prints were produced, allowing conference attendees to support the AENC Scholarship Fund while taking home a lasting reminder of North Carolina's beauty—and of the simple truth that each of us has the ability to make a difference.

Watching leaders carry those prints home was especially meaningful. The painting had become more than artwork. It had become a conversation, a fundraiser, and a reminder that when awareness, resourcefulness, and timing come together, ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary things.

As I look back on this journey, I'm reminded that paintings eventually find a wall.  But ideas have the potential to change lives.  If this series has reinforced anything for me, it's this:

Notice what others overlook. Use what you've been given. And when the moment comes... don't hesitate.

You never know whose life may be different because you chose to act.
