Making a Difference: The Honor Card Program

MSNBC | FROM THE WEB | 12/24/09

NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams featured “North Carolina’s Artist” William Mangum and his holiday Honor Card program on their most popular feature, "Making a Difference." The producers at NBC Nightly News search the country for and profile ordinary people doing extraordinary things, helping neighbors -- or even complete strangers -- in these tough economic times. The top-rated newscast, which has more than 9.5 million viewers nightly, filmed Mangum at work at the Greensboro Urban Ministry, which provides a host of services and support to the homeless, at his gallery and at locations around Greensboro that inspired scenes on past honor cards.

The Long Winter Journey of William Mangum

PineStraw Magazine / Jim Dodson | PRINT | December 2009

“There’s something in each of us, I think, that eventually needs to give something back to those who have helped us on the journey,” says acclaimed artist and Pinehurst native Bill Mangum, pausing to reflect on a particular painting in his spacious Greensboro gallery. “And for me, this painting really says it all.”

The painting is called “Bridge of Hope.” It shows a simple stone bridge spanning a woodland creek, mantled by newly fallen snow. In the forefront, a lone set of footsteps tracks across the bridge, while in the distance a man moves toward a clearing where afternoon sunlight paints the tops of the trees and blue skies hint of a receding storm.

It’s a book to make the chamber of commerce proud. For the fifth bound collection of his paintings, “Greensboro: Roots and Renaissance,” William Mangum celebrates business and industry, traditional neighborhoods and the fine arts. Working downtown in his “hole in the wall” studio on Bellemeade Street, the artist has glorified his adopted home. He works in a style reminiscent of American illustrators like Norman Rockwell and Jessie Willcox Smith, and he wrote text to accompany the layouts in his new book.
